A Building Professional’s Guide to Selecting Magnesium Oxide (MgO) Products for Safe, Resilient Construction
Nexgen Building Products LLC
https://nexgenbp.com/
About
The presentation is geared towards educating the building professional about structural Magnesium Oxide (MgO) products to give them enough background knowledge to confidently specify and approve them on projects. The presentation is focused on giving the building professionals the tools they need to get enough information from MgO manufacturers in order to safely design and approve the products for the appropriate uses. The presentation provides a brief overview of MgO products (what they are / how they are made) and the uses (panelized construction). The presentation then takes a deeper dive into the sustainability and resiliency characteristics of the products (fire performance, resilience to natural disasters, etc.), issues to be aware of with some products in the market that can result in structural issues, code requirements (building safety), and the importance of selecting certified products to ensure adequate performance.
Learning Objectives
Provide a general overview of Magnesium Oxide Panels – what are they, what are they made of, where are they used, and what are some of the mechanical, structural, and fire properties that lend them to be good solutions for various project types.
Explain the characteristics of the panels that provide a solution for resilient (resistant to storm, fire, water and mold damage), sustainable (comparative carbon footprint to conventional Portland Cement products), and energy efficient construction (IECC continuous exterior insulation requirements).
Provide a general education about issues regarding moisture management and corrosion that can be present poorly formulated MgO products.
Explain the requirements in Chapter 1 of the IBC and Chapter R1 of the IRC when it comes to “Alternative Means and Methods” and what options are available to address them.
Explain the requirements of the ICC-ES Evaluation Report / certification process and how those types of certifications can be used by a specifier or code official to make informed decisions about code compliance and product usage.
